His specialty, in the art world, was working with watercolours. He was fascinating to watch; on one occasion even bringing in a live yabbie to paint. Some of his works are displayed below.

"When you go out to paint," Monet remarked, "try to forget what objects you have in front of you, a tree, a field... Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here is an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you, the exact colour and shape, until it gives your own naive impression of the scene."
